A 3D monitor without glasses: a camera that follows your eyes
Another fun test we did with colleagues at Syncrosoft. It wasn’t VR yet, but something close.
We put a webcam above the monitor that simply followed our eyes. You move your head, and the program redraws the picture for the spot you’re looking from. On screen is a box-shaped room with a grid on its walls and balls on sticks inside it.
February 2009, filmed on a phone. The phone moves along with the head, and the box on screen turns as if it stood behind glass.
You get the full feeling that the screen is three-dimensional: the monitor stops being a flat picture and becomes a window. You can look past the edge of that window — lean to the left and you see what the right wall was hiding.
What I took from it: depth doesn’t need glasses or a headset. It’s enough for the picture to know where the viewer is.
